By Sophie Cornish NEW BRIGHTON properties including a working men’s club have been attacked by vandals with paintball guns. The attacks began on Wednesday last week and have continued over the weekend. The drive-by shootings on Lonsdale St, Keyes Rd and Marine Pde saw green and yellow pellets fired at cars, fences and homes. Resident Samuel Kent heard a loud bang at his Lonsdale St property and discovered a window had been smashed from a paintball gun pellet. Paint was splattered on his curtains and windowsill. Mr Kent said several properties were hit along his side of the street last Wednesday night. The New Brighton Club was also hit six times on the same night. Its windows required professional cleaning. People attending a function in an upstairs room were startled by the loud bangs, similar to the sound of gun shots. •Turn to page 4

FROM THE REPORTER’S DESK SOME unwanted trigger-happy guests have been frustrating residents in New Brighton on page 1. Shooting paintballs at cars, fences and windows seems like an activity of boredom which perpetrators will eventually move on from soon. Getting good identification of the cars and number plates is key to reporting these unwanted troublemakers. On page 3, worried residents in Mairehau want to alert the public about a concerning bend in a road which is causing issues. Glenfield Cres residents want speed bumps and signs to avoid drivers misjudging the corner. A recent incident saw one driver end up in hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle hit a car parked in a driveway. Hopefully, their concerns will be heard to avoid any further crashes in the future. – Sophie Cornish

Bid to fix Mairehau’s crash corner Residents fear next smash will be fatal By Andrew King RESIDENTS ON a Mairehau street believe it’s only a matter of time before a child is seriously hurt following a number of crashes at one of its corners. Residents between 59 and 65 Glenfield Cres have seen plenty of people misjudge the corner outside their homes. The latest incident put a man in hospital with serious injuries after he hit a parked vehicle in a driveway on September 13. He had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters and resident Dave Parson’s work vehicle was badly damaged. Bob Autridge, who has lived on the street for the past 16 years, said something needs to be done. “We need a bloody great big sign and some speed bumps put in,” he said. “It is only a matter of time before some kid on the footpath gets it.” City council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said a report on the

latest crash had been received from a resident. City council staff are investigating some “lowcost interventions to make the bends more conspicuous”. Installing two speed bumps would cost about $50,000 but Mr Haymes said, at the present time, traffic calming initiatives were not a high-priority and funding was not available for these types of schemes.
Mr Autridge asked the Papanui-Innes Community Board last year to paint yellow lines around the corner to improve visibility, which they did in January. Residents say the lines were a good start, but more needs to be done. In June, a woman failed to take the corner and ended up on the front lawn of the property next

door to resident Neville Amor’s house. Before that crash, he said another person had actually hit the power pole. In 2012, two men in a “soupedup Subaru” came around the corner and smashed into a container on Mr Amor’s front lawn. “They moved the container about 20cm, so they must have hit it quite hard,” he said.

In Brief CRASH VICTIM NAMED The woman killed in crash on QE II Drive last week has been named. She was 86-year-old Eileen Margaret Pearce. The crash on October 18 involved a car and a van. The van driver was taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries. Canterbury metro area commander Superintendent Lane Todd said it appeared the elderly woman’s car crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with the van. The serious crash unit are investigating the cause. FLOOD CAUSE The flooding that occurred on Beach Rd, between Effingham St and Marine Pde, on Thursday was due to a 20cm water main blowing. City council contractors were on the scene early, but residents had low water pressure while others were without water until it was turned back on at 4pm. BRIGHTON FUND LOW A Development Christchurch community fund will be exhausted in the upcoming months. The Creating Momentum Regeneration Fund was created to encourage investment in New Brighton. Various events and business ventures have been funded by the $100,000 budget which is available on a “first come, first serve basis”.

Volunteers ready to shift community garden
Long-term surf lifesavers honoured
By Sophie Cornish WORK WILL begin on the new Shirley Community garden this week. The new garden is located in MacFarlane Park on Jebson St. Previously, it was located on Housing New Zealand land in Riselaw St. The Just Dirt Trust were granted a two-year lease for the garden but were told to move after only nine months when the land was put up for sale. Spokesman for The Just Dirt Trust Selwyn Eagle said the garden is for community use and he hopes it will bring neighbours together. “The main thing for me is getting people meeting people and to meet those who they’ve lived down the road from for 20 years and are now doing something together.” Those who want to be involved in maintaining the garden will receive its fruits, said Mr Eagle. “There will still be some organisation, we will have a list of what is growing and once it’s ready, it will be dished out amongst everyone.” No money is required in return. Plans for the area include transforming the current public toilet block into a tool shed, said garden organiser Ian Dunbar. Currently only some raised beds have been established, as Mr Dunbar and volunteers continue to get the garden under way. Community support and involvement has been high according to Mr Dunbar, who said he’s had several calls about updates on the garden. A temporary lease for the land has been granted and there is hopes that the new lease under the city council will be for 10 years.
By Sophie Cornish WAIMAIRI AND North Beach surf lifesaving club members have been honoured for their service and work. Steve Johnson and Brett Leask of the Waimairi club were awarded life membership at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving awards in Auckland on Saturday night. Paul Goosey, Greg Samson and Don and Rex Dalton of North Beach club were awarded 50-year badges for their service. Mr Leask says receiving the award is an honour. As a child, Mr Leask lived on Pacific St, a short distance from the Waimairi club where he says he’s been ‘hanging around’ since he was 10 years old. “With surf lifesaving, you’re in it for life,” said Mr Leask, who is now 69 years old. The combination of sport and community service is what he believes makes surf lifesaving great. “There is a fellowship within the clubs, especially in the 60s and 70s, it was a great matchmaking environment also,” he said.

Camaraderie, fun and friendship are all elements which have kept Mr Leask involved in the sport over the years.
After 18 years of service in Otago, Mr Leask returned to Christchurch and the Waimairi club in his late 30s.
In total, he has given 55 years of service to Surf Life Saving New Zealand. Several roles including club captain, instructor and club president for four years were undertaken by Mr Leask. “I like the training, I like the environment and I like the families, we are now into our third generation at the club,” he said. Mr Leask has nieces, nephews and grandchildren involved in the club also. President of North Beach Surf Club Roger Smith, speaks highly of the men from receiving their 50 year badges. “One of the mottos for surf lifesaving is: ‘In it for life,’ and they are great examples of guys who’ve done that.” Rex and Don Dalton are in their 70s now, however, in their prime both were New Zealand champions for their events, said Mr Smith. “They’ve had a huge history – the Dalton name in North Beach – their father was a great surf lifesaver, so they’ve carried on a great family tradition,” he said.

Southshore floodplain decision delayed By Sophie Cornish A DECISION over the Southshore Floodplain Management Short Term Plan has been pushed back to October 10. The delay will provide more
time for discussions, said Coastal-Burwood Community Board chairwoman Kim Money. The board is working to ensure their suggestions are included in the recommendations for the city council report.
City council has proposed a solution to put bunding 20-30m back on the estuary coastline between Pleasant Point Yacht Club and the new boardwalk. This will allow for natural erosion to take place.

The project is split into two elements, a prevention aspect and the treatment aspect. Benjamin Diaz volunteers his time to help out with the prevention aspect. This involves visiting maraes and speaks to people about the importance of maintaining oral health care. “We advocate the programme and encourage people to come down and visit the dentist and see what services may be available to them,” Mr Diaz said. Resources are funded by the project and the time and services are volunteered. Treatments took place on the past two Saturdays. Each patient was given a half hour window where they could
receive fillings, extractions, radiographs, root canal dressing and gum cleaning, based on their needs. After treatment, volunteers sat down with patients and family members to discuss good oral care. They were given bags with toothpaste, a toothbrush and dental floss with instructions. Flyers were dispersed to community areas such as Linwood Library and Linwood Medical Centre about the project, encouraging people to visit the dental clinic. This is the sixth year Wrigley Company Foundation and New Zealand Dental Association Community Service Grants have offered funding to those in need through-out New Zealand. Approximately $47,000 was offered this year and dispersed between 12 projects across the country.

Central New Brighton School played a role in the New Brighton community for 125 years and was closed due to costly earthquake repairs. The school merged with Freeville and North New Brighton schools to become Rawhiti School, which opened its doors in January 2015. The long-term future of the site following the end of the lease is still to be established. Manager of the New Brighton Business and Landowners Association Paul Lonsdale said the opening of the hub will be very beneficial for the area. “The Old School brings that social element and community cohesiveness, it’s good that they are activating the area,” he said.

There were speeches, food, a Maori blessing and the opportunity to walk through all the new spaces. Co-ordinator Sue Davidson wants the community to take advantage of a space which is ultimately theirs. “It was (the opening) about bringing people in and saying this is your space, come and use it, get involved.” Renew New Brighton are six months into their two-year lease granted by the school to transform the empty space into a hub where organisations and locals can meet and discuss art, wellbeing, health and education. Community groups, artists and not-for-profit organisations have permanent spots in the classrooms and the office area is used as a bookable space for meetings,

By Sophie Cornish A PROJECT targeting the oral health of low-income Maori and Pacific Islander adults is currently under way in Linwood. Free dental services such as extractions and fillings are on offer to those living in Linwood and surrounding areas. Funded by Wrigley Company Foundation and New Zealand Dental Association Community Service Grants, the I Roto Dental Services Project was gifted over $4000 to provide services to 20-25 patients. Co-ordinator for the project at the Linwood Dental Centre Shorokh Hamandani, said this target group was chosen as they are some of the most vulnerable to poor oral health. “We have to start somewhere and the uptake of their (Maori

Message from the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. Feast Day Festivities One of the most anticipated events on the Marian College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day began with a whole school Mass, which included the blessing of the new music department, featuring practice spaces and a multipurpose room. Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete in a talent quest and house group chant competition. Rivalry between the four Marian College houses – Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition. Each performance is judged and awarded house points which are tallied throughout the year. The house with the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural, service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving.

Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) could be heading to France next year to represent New Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup. The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the Oceania Football Confederation championships in Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France, 2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five game campaign which saw the team win all their games convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns development squad and has played with Mainland Pride (the National Women’s regional team) for three years.
Judo medallist Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term. She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two categories at the Auckland International Judo Open tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds!
Wellbeing and service A priority for Marian College this year has been student and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing, character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and developing study and life skills. The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian women. Especially for year 12 students, the course teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers, financial literacy and service. Marian College has a strong commitment to providing service to the community. Not only students, but staff members are also actively involved. Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of service activities including assisting at Christchurch City Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach, gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other children in need.
Southern Jam Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s Christchurch Jazz Festival.

Disc golf set to take Maudes on Trade Me off at Queenspark open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
By Sophie Cornish QUEENSPARK Reserve may have a disc golf course this summer. Parklands Residents Association chairman David Baines is waiting on approval from the CoastalBurwood Community Board and city council on whether the course will go ahead. If the plans are signed off, the nine-hole course will be established in Queenspark Reserve, a good location, according to Mr Baines. “Because there is elevation, a few rolling hills and well-established trees, it will create a bit of character to it, which will be quite unique.” Christchurch Disc Golf member Chris Davies agrees: “It’s a lovely location for it. Technically it could be the first links course in the country because the rolling terrain in the area is still the sand dunes profile from the original terrain.”

Mr Baines said there is a lot of support for the idea from all parties involved. He said the course will bring a fun and healthy activity for families to the eastern suburbs. The public will be able to use the course for free, if they bring along their own frisbee or disc. Equipment to hire will also be available.
“Our intention is to make it as accessible and cheap as we can for the public,” he said. Establishing the course will not be too difficult, said Mr Baines. The goals – a metal basket-like structure – a starting platform tee, some paved areas and a map will be required for each hole. Finding funding will be the next step following the sign-off. “We have a little bit of funds we can access, but we will be looking at community partners for help, whether they want to sponsor a hole or make a donation to see the course become established,” Mr Baines said. Disc golf was created in the 1970s and is played similar to traditional golf. However players use a flying disc or frisbee. The objective is to complete the hole in the fewest number of throws. There is one other disc golf course in Christchurch at Jellie Park.

With more than 200 items a week being listed, Maudes on Trade Me is very dependent on a steady stream of donated goods. “Please dive into your cupboards and garage for that unused sports equipment, jewellery, china, glass, silverware, furniture, whiteware - in fact pretty much anything in good saleable condition,” says Sue

By Mark Thomas – specialist fire investigator DAYLIGHT SAVING has come and gone, so my hope is that everyone has taken the time to swap the batteries in their smoke detectors. This should be a tradition in Kiwi households, but the reminder is still there. If you don’t change them the alarms will probably still work. But when they go flat enough for the annoying little squeak to start squawking I can almost guarantee it’ll happen at between 2am and 4am. That’ll make the rest of the night a lot of fun, won’t it? There were three oven fires last week including one in Mairehau on Wednesday at about 4pm where our troops had to break in. It appears the stove was left on when the occupants went out. They’re lucky to have a house left. An earlier fire in Richmond was confined to the inside of the oven. Unfortunately, for the people in the house what was in the oven
was their roast pork for tea. The crackling ignited. That’s a waste. I liked the story behind a call to Linwood last Friday. There was no fire but the elderly diabetic caller was desperate to eat to keep his sugar levels right. However, his power had gone out halfway through cooking. He called police, who were flat out. Once again the increasing co-operation between emergency services resulted in a request across the combined communications centre floor. Woolston fire crew were sent. They reset the power in the house. Cooking recommenced. Meal made. A small story with a happy ending.

Earlier in the year, I wrote about the principle of collaboration and its importance to our students as they prepare for the global world in which they will live their lives. This is because the global world requires effective interaction with others. IQ alone is not enough. Our Emotional Intelligence (EI) – also matters. I also discussed that we now know through neuro-science that IQ-smartness is not fixed but can grow. Effort makes us stronger. In schools this is sometimes called ‘growth mindsets’. For more information on this please see https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/ I raise these points again at the end of Term 3 as our focus even more tightly centres on our senior students’ success in their Yr 11-13 Career Pathway and for the juniors, their Year 7-10 Learning Pathway.

Meet the Mayor Nineteen Linwood College students attended the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Award Ceremony with the Honourable Lianne Dalziel, Christchurch’s Mayor. This prestigious event was held at the Mayoral Office.
The Year 11 production, ‘Harbouring Ghosts’ was a fantastic, eerie performance. Through this, students explored the healing of past mistakes. It was then the Year 12/13 classes' turn to take the stage. They tackled an adaption of Hamlet, ‘Ophelia Thinks Harder’. This was an extremely challenging performance which students handled with finesse.
We congratulate these students on their efforts and again thank Chris Allan from the Joshua Foundation for his mentorship and tremendous commitment to Christchurch youth.
In 2016, twelve Linwood College students acted as extras in ‘The Changeover’, a movie filmed and set in Christchurch’s Eastern suburbs.
Based on a novel by Margaret Mahy and starring Timothy Spall and Lucy Lawless, this comes out in theatres on September 28. Get down and support our local talent.
Prom Night 2017 For many Seniors the 2017 ‘American Prom’ was the highlight of the year’s social calendar. Magic was in the air and everyone was dressed to the nines - dancing the night away with flashing tambourines and Mickey Mouse ears. It was truly a special occasion, full of smiles,
friendship and laughter and one which our students will never forget. Staff working at Twiggers said that it was a pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable occasion. They were extremely complimentary towards our students’ positive demeanor.

Boys’ High nurture promising Maori star Aranui’s Tahu Kaa-Goodwillie has been selected in the under-18 Maori side after a solid season with UC Championship-winning Christchurch Boys’ High School. He talks to Andrew King about almost heading to Auckland after being spotted at an intermediate sevens tournament Tahu Kaa-Goodwillie has been playing the sport he loves since age four and the hard work has paid off with his inclusion in the under-18 Maori side. The 17-year-old, whose iwi is both Ngati Porou and Ngai Tahu, was a standout performer in this year’s UC Championship at second-five with a number of line breaks and a huge defensive workload cementing his spot in the starting Christchurch Boys’ High School side and earning him a call-up for higher honours. But he could have been busting tackles in Auckland. His talent was identified when he was 12 by talent scouts from a couple of Auckland schools at the 2012 AIMS Games in Tauranga, where he was playing sevens for Chisnallwood Intermediate. He was offered a full scholarship to St Kentigern College, Auckland, which prompted him to talk with then coach and PE teacher Jared Mitchell about what he should do. “I had no idea what to tell him so I got High School Old Boys coach Aaron Mauger to have a
chat with him about the pros and cons of going north or staying here,” Mitchell said. Kaa-Goodwillie was planning on heading to CBHS, but the offer from Auckland gave him another option to consider. A meeting with CBHS headmaster Nic Hill, school sports co-ordinator Steven Dodds and Mauger outlined that he could have the best of both worlds, great education and a chance to play in a well-respected rugby team. “Aaron told him you don’t need to be in Auckland to be an All Black. But we said it would not just be rugby, school work came first,” Mr Hill said. Kaa-Goodwillie said the decision to stay in Canterbury was so he could be close to family, but the Auckland offer was hard to turn down. “But it has worked out pretty good for me,” he said. He stayed with his uncle Stewart Kaa for two years on Rata St, Fendalton, less than 1km from CBHS, so he was in the zone to attend the high school before moving back home with

his mother Tania Kaa and father Karlin Goodwillie in Parklands. His form this year earned him selection in the Crusaders Junior Knights development camp held at St Andrew’s College in July before being selected in the Junior Knights who lost 25-10 in a curtainraiser match against the under-18 Hurricanes side. He has been involved in Metro representative rugby since age 13. He trialled and missed out on the New Zealand Schools team this year but said making the Maori team is a fantastic stepping stone for him as it has always been his dream to play rugby professionally.
“With the Maori team, we get to play more games compared to the New Zealand Schools side. So that has been a bit of blessing in disguise,” he said. Kaa-Goodwillie played for the Linwood Rugby Club until age 11, before playing for the Christchurch Football Club until high school. He now plays for CBHS’s first XV. “The move to Christchurch Football Club was to develop me as a player. I will always have a soft spot for Linwood, though, and I am considering a return to play there one day,” KaaGoodwillie said. The Christchurch club was
formed in 1863 and is the oldest club in the country, producing 32 All Blacks including Richie McCaw. CBHS first XV coach Danny Porte said Kaa-Goodwillie is an impressive ball-runner. “He is a very physical when carrying the ball into contact and is a direct physical threat to the defensive line,” he said. “He has great footwork and great leg drive and is very professional about the way he goes about things on and off the field.” He was in the gym last week when the call came through that he had been included in the Maori side. “It hasn’t really soaked in yet, but for me, it was a satisfying end to the season and a great reward for all hard work that I had put in over the year,” he said. Kaa-Goodwillie, who measuring 185cm and weighing in at 91kg is one of the quickest players in the current CBHS team, said he looks up to players like Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty. The under-18 Maori team will play the New Zealand Schools Barbarians on Monday in Palmerston North before taking on Tonga Schools in Porirua on October 6. Both games have a 2pm kickoff.

SPRING ONION PANCAKES Ingredients 250g Plain flour, plus extra for dusting 80 ml Boiling water 70 ml Cold water 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil 1 bunch Spring onion, finely chopped 1 tsp Sesame seeds Directions Put the flour in a bowl and add the boiling water, stirring with chopsticks. This is called ‘burning’ the flour. Give it a mix
and once it has cooled enough, continue mixing with your hands. Add the cold water, a quarter at a time, and continue mixing. When mixed thoroughly, take the dough out of the bowl and knead on a flour-covered bench. You may need to add more flour as you knead. Continue kneading until the dough is shiny and your hands and the bench are clear of dough. Roll the dough into a ball and place in a bowl covered with cling film. Seat aside for about half an hour. Take a piece of dough about the size of your fist and roll it out on the bench into a circle about 15cm in diameter. Spread some
vegetable oil over the dough, then sprinkle over the chopped spring onion. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds. Roll the pancake into a tight cylinder, then coil it around into a circle (like a caterpillar rolling itself into a circle). With a rolling pin, flatten this circle into a pancake again. Add oil to your frying pan and heat to a medium-high heat. Add the pancake to the frying pan and fry until golden, then flip and cook the other side until golden and crisp. Serve as a side dish with chilli oil or chilli sauce or your favourite Asian-inspired dip. Also great at breakfast time.

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C fan bake. Combine the first 10 ingredients in a bowl. Mix in one egg. Divide mixture evenly onto four sheets of pastry, taking care to ensure you leave some space on each edge (about 2.5cm) for easy rolling. Lightly beat remaining egg for egg wash and brush the edges to help seal the pinwheel. Roll each sheet from the long end and cut each into four pinwheels with a sharp knife. Place on baking paper on oven tray and egg wash the pinwheels. Sprinkle on sesame seeds. Bake for 30min until golden.

Melanoma Deadlier Than Road Fatalities Summer is around the corner, and it brings with it the temptation for some to “pre-tan” using artificial UV tanning equipment; but is it really worth the risk?
M
ore people die from melanoma each year than are killed annually in road crashes. This statistic was part of a comprehensive submission made to parliament’s Health Select Committee which is considering outlawing sunbeds for people under the age of 18 years. The submission was made by Accuro Health Insurance, established in the 1970s as a private insurer for the public health sector. Today it trades as a private health insurer with a widespread, general membership. Accuro, in supporting the submission made by the New Zealand Dermatological Society, pointed to a New Zealand Cancer Society figure of 324 deaths from melanoma in 2010. According to the NZ Road Transport Agency there were 253 road deaths for the 12 months to February 2014 and 303 for the 12 months to February 2015. In highlighting the figure, CEO Geoff Annals emphasised the serious nature of the disease and his submission drew the committee’s attention to the financial, social and personal costs of skin cancer. He quoted Cancer Society figures which report that New Zealand, along with

The Cancer Society further reports that skin cancer currently costs this country about $123 million annually. Geoff Annals says research by the Centre for Disease Control showed the introduction of seat belts reduced serious crash related injuries and deaths by about half and banning artificial UV tanning services is warranted on the same public health grounds as the compulsory seat belt legislation. While Accuro’s submission related to a ban for people under 18 years, it supports the introduction of a total ban on commercial artificial UV tanning. “As a health insurer grounded in the public health sector, we are strongly committed to supporting the effectiveness of publicly funded health services and better health outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Geoff Annals says. A leading New Zealand dermatologist, Dr Louise Reiche, who also made submissions to the Health Select Committee, says she’s
